Senior Software Engineer

Permanent · Full Time · Kings Hill, Kent

Position Overview

Senior Software Engineers own the technical delivery of a small squad (typically 3–5 engineers) building software with Blazor, C# and RDT’s design system, and report to the Head of Software Engineering. A Senior Software Engineer role combines hands-on technical leadership with line management responsibility, and is a natural next step for engineers who want to grow into leading people as well as leading delivery.

You'll sit at the heart of delivering great web experiences for real insurance users - interacting directly with customers as you push the UI/UX forward. Yours is a dual-facing role: leading your squad’s day-to-day delivery and technical direction, while line-managing a small number of engineers within it. You will liaise with your immediate team, other Leads across the business and our customers and third parties. You will shape technical solutions, help analyse business requirements, produce technical designs, and support the people in your squad to grow their skills and careers.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will lead a small squad delivering web applications built with Blazor, C# and RDT’s design system, setting technical direction and owning code quality within the squad.
  • You will build enterprise, cloud-native applications in Azure, and be involved in the full software development lifecycle, from design through to deployment and support, alongside your squad.
  • You will line-manage a small number of engineers, including regular 1:1s, career development conversations and performance reviews.
  • You will work collaboratively with product owners, delivery managers and other squad / team leads to plan and prioritise your squad’s work, with transparency and clear visibility of progress and risk.
  • You will make good use of AI-assisted engineering tools to work faster and with better quality, applying sound judgement about where human review matters most, and help your squad do the same.

Technical Skills & Requirements

Essential
  • Solid, demonstrable knowledge of Blazor (Server and/or WebAssembly), with the ability to build and maintain applications that consume a shared design system or component library.
  • You are design-minded, with a good eye and taste for craft in web UI/UX, and enjoy working closely with design to get the details right.
  • You like to own a solution end-to-end - from initial design and technical approach through to production support - rather than handing off pieces of the problem.
  • You have a strong working knowledge of C# and .NET.
  • You have experience in highly available, multi-tier and enterprise application solutions, and can design and implement loosely coupled, cloud-native applications.
  • You have good experience developing RESTful and/or event-driven APIs using ASP.NET and understand the principles of good API design.
  • You understand the practice of test-driven development and the value of a strong automated testing pyramid - unit, integration and acceptance tests - and can hold your squad to that standard through code review.
Desirable
  • You have experience contributing to or maintaining a design system or shared component library used across multiple applications.
  • You are Microsoft/Azure certified.
  • You have experience building and operating applications in the cloud, ideally Azure
  • You have exposure to automated CI/CD pipelines and understand the practices needed to release software safely and frequently.

Competency Requirements

Essential
  • A degree, similar level qualification, with 2-3 years experience, ready for that next step up
  • Established experience of developing high quality software systems, with some experience leading, or informally leading, a small team.
  • Strong experience and knowledge of all aspects of the Software Development Lifecycle.
  • You make pragmatic, commercially minded decisions - balancing technical ideals against cost, timescale and business value, and knowing when good enough today beats perfect too late.
Desirable
  • You have insurance industry experience.
  • You have experience or a demonstrable aptitude for leading a small team – setting technical direction, reviewing code, and having honest development conversations, including 1:1s and performance reviews.
  • You understand the importance of application scalability, performance and observability
  • You've worked on agile projects, and you appreciate the value of rapid iterations. You have experience of agile and practical experience of working as part of an agile team.
  • You have ambition to grow further into product or engineering leadership - for example towards a Principal Software Engineer or Engineering Manager path and a passion for creating great software.

Benefits & Opportunities

Benefits
  • 25 days holiday plus Public Holidays
  • Company pension
  • Private health cover
  • Free parking at the office
  • Electric car salary sacrifice scheme
  • Company social events

As a graduate with no prior experience in the working world, breaking into the tech industry was tough. However, RDT has provided me an invaluable opportunity. My experience being recruited by RDT was smooth, swift, and stress free. Furthermore, the process was not dragged out, nor were there any long periods of silence. RDT kept me informed during every step of the process with clear lines of communication as well as addressing any concerns I raised with respect and openness.
