Hi, I’m Andy Wootton and I’m an IT support engineer here at RDT.
IT has always been a hobby of mine. As a kid I used to take computers apart and put them back together again, and I was always happy to help friends and family when they had issues with their home technology.
I decided to pursue a career in IT when I realised it was possible to work in a field that I was passionate about and enjoyed. I’ve never looked back. Before I joined RDT I worked for a managed service provider that operated an IT helpdesk for small businesses. While there I applied to join RDT because I wanted to push myself and learn more.
RDT uses a lot of different systems and the technology here is cutting edge, so it was very different to anything I’d worked on before and I did feel a little overwhelmed at first. There are more servers than I was used to working with, and I needed to become familiar with new technologies. But the team I work with is friendly and very helpful, and they answered all my questions and helped me to grow and develop into my role as it is today. As I gained experience I was able to perform more tasks independently, and was given more responsibility.
The IT team supports RDT’s internal systems and our managed service clients on Azure and Citrix, so I’m always being exposed to new technology, which means I am always learning. No two days are the same, the tech and the way we use it is always evolving, so there is always something new to learn.
RDT is sponsoring me to study for a degree on its apprenticeship programme and I really appreciate that it’s investing in me and my future. I’m taking a digital technology solutions course with the Open University. RDT lets me have time to study, I’m enjoying the course and it’s going well so far!
RDT is the best company I’ve ever worked for, it’s obvious that they really care about the employees here. I especially enjoy the outside work events such as the panic room evenings and the summer socials. People are friendly and welcoming, and they are happy to help if you have questions.
Lead IT Support Engineer Matt Tompkins said: “Andy has fitted into RDT really well and is an asset to the IT team. We are investing in his professional development and, as he progresses with his training, we will be able to give him greater responsibilities and expose him to more of the advanced technology we and our clients use.”
